Keynote Speaker

Program Description:
In this dynamic and deeply personal session, Dr. Roberto Montoya reflects on his journey as an advocate for equity and justice, rooted in his upbringing in New Mexico and work in post-secondary education. Drawing from the wisdom of James Baldwin and indigenous epistemologies, he urges participants to engage in deep and meaningful dialogue, emphasizing the importance of humility and grace in leadership. Through his experiences as Associate Vice President at InsideTrack focusing on Hispanic Serving Institutions and as the former Chief Educational Equity Officer for the State of Colorado, Dr. Montoya highlights three key insights for participants: the need to be less prescriptive and more responsive when working with communities, the necessity of bold action backed by disaggregated data and clear accountability measures, and the imperative to move away from formulaic approaches and embrace the complexity of community-centered work. By sharing his upbringing in the barrios of Albuquerque, Montoya challenges deficit notions of historically racialized and under-resourced communities and emphasizes the beauty, love, and resilience present within them. Through testimonio/narrative, participants are inspired to confront resistance, dismantle inequities, and foster genuine community engagement in their pursuit of justice and equity in career services.
